Elm Creek Quilts: Joanna's Collection
by Jennifer Chiaverini
Jennifer Chiaverini’s novel, The Lost Quilter, provides the inspiration for her latest fabric collection. The lovely patterns were developed with the influence of the deep South as is reflected in the setting of the story itself. The lovely magnolia floral sets the stage for this twin-sized bed quilt that was designed by Laura Blanchard. The focus blocks use the weathervane pattern that is based on a nine-patch construction. The center squares features the medium scale floral print in chocolate brown that is accented nicely with the peach and pink coordinate fabrics. The alternate block is a pinwheel chain block that uses a spring green print as the chain. The combination of blocks provides loads of interest and helps to keep your eye moving across the quilt! Using the multicolor bargello-like print and deep brown tonal as the inner borders helps to define the quilt and add structure to the whole design.

Overall quilting using a pattern with soft curves will help to balance the strong geometric style of the quilt design. However, you could also follow the pattern provided by the pieced blocks by first straight stitching through all of the green chain blocks and then outlining the pinwheels and elements of the focus block. The borders can be stitched with a large scale diagonal grid to reflect the diagonal movement of the quilt’s interior pattern.

The quilt measures 58" x 82"
