Kingyo’s stunning patterns are used beautifully in this elegant design by Laura Blanchard. The thematic panel is the focus and is placed against the asymmetrically pieced background fabrics. Koi “windows” are cut from the medallion print and are appliquéd beneath the panel. The red large-scale floral print provides the appliqués that glow against the black background. The outer border is cut from the multi-section stripe to create the appearance of multiple borders when, in fact, there is only one.
Machine appliqué was used to sew the red flowers and koi circles to the background. You can use whatever method or stitch that you are most comfortable with using. While invisible thread is certainly appropriate, you may want to consider using metallic thread to emphasize the gold accents used in the printing.
Quilting can be as simple or creative as you choose! Outline and/or trapunto quilting techniques could be used within the panel design while echo quilting could be used around the appliquéd motifs. Specialty threads – metallic or variegated – would look lovely and add a polished touch to the quilt.
The quilt measures 58” x 77”. It could be used as a sofa quilt or a large wall quilt. Add a sleeve to the back and use a piece of bamboo to hang this against a large wall as a dramatic piece of art. Download Pattern (363 KB pdf file)
