This 51” x 63” quilt was designed by Terri of Whimsicals and machine quilted by Connie Lancaster. The warm, primitive style of Whimsicals is carried through in both the fabric design as well as this quilt project. The motifs of the collage-style panel are used throughout this charming quilt both within the blocks as well as scattered in one of the borders. The random look of the quilt blocks is achieved by using an assortment of background fabrics as well as varying the placement of the smaller units within each of the 12” blocks (set 3 x 4). Plus, a fast, easy and unique method for creating Flying Geese units is explained well in the pattern instructions. A matchstick border perfectly frames the blocks and provides a final, cohesive touch. The quilt can be quilted as simply or elaborately as you choose. Outline quilting in the seams will provide adequate quilting while emphasizing the major design elements. However, if you would like to add more detail, the printed motifs in the panel blocks can be outline quilted for extra dimension. You could also use a heavier thread for quilting (i.e. buttonhole twist) and a larger needle to hand quilt using a “big stitch” quilting stitch – very appropriate quilting method for this style of fabric and quilt. You may want to consider making a smaller version of this quilt (set 3 x 3). This would leave a few extra panel blocks to use for making some coordinating toss pillows. Consider purchasing an extra panel to make a table runner and placemats for your kitchen or dining room table. Download Pattern (371 KB pdf file)
