The Cat Party
by BarbaraLavallee
Laura Blanchard designed and pieced this playful 59" x 69" quilt that’s the perfect size for a kid's bed. It was machine quilted by A Needle Runs Through It. The twenty 10" Pinwheel blocks are framed with rectangular strips from four lively textures. The framed Pinwheels are then tilted using half-rectangles. Block A is tilted using a black yarn print and Block B using the multicolored dots on four bright backgrounds. To assemble the quilt center, simply alternate Block A and B in five rows of four blocks each. Add an inner border from the red texture and use the wide border stripe with frolicking cats, dots, and a stripe for the outer border. Sew the two borders together, add to the Pinwheel center, and miter.

For an even faster-to-finish project, just make nine or sixteen blocks and add the borders. Another alternative is to omit the half-rectangles (and the tilt) and the framing rectangles will become instant sashing! This quilt would be fun to embellish with buttons on the centers of the pinwheels or 1/8" double-faced satin ribbon in several colors, sewn on at random, to imitate bits of yarn.
