Naturally Naturals
by Red Rooster Studio
This very appealing 60" square pieced and machine appliquéd quilt was designed and made by Jean Ann Wright using a mix of twenty-one neutrals from the collection. You’ll also need fusible web and a neutral color thread for the machine appliqué. The templates for the center flowers and buds, the corner flower blocks, and the outer wedge borders are all shown at 100%. The center block finishes at 24" square and the corner blocks at 8" square. The backgrounds for these appliquéd blocks are strip pieced using a variety of the neutrals to add interest. Jean Ann used a satin stitch for her machine appliqué and recommends that you practice the stitch to set your length and width before appliquéing the flowers and buds to the pieced backgrounds.
Next, you’ll add the inner border and piece the flying geese border. Jean Ann suggests using a fabric sizing or spray starch when you press the flying geese blocks to stabilize the long bias edges before assembling the borders. Then sew on the second border. Piece the wedge borders, alternating both the direction of the wedges and the light and medium value wedges. Add the corner flower blocks and the top is done. To finish, simply machine quilt in the ditch or with a flowing all over design!
For a quicker project, omit the outer wedge border and you’ll have a 44" square quilt that would perfect as a wall hanging or table topper.
