Elm Creek Quilts: The Winding Ways Quilt
by JenniferChiaverini
Jean Ann Wright designed, pieced, and quilted this 64" x 76" quilt, which features two alternating 12" blocks. The ten pieced Paradox blocks have deep red star points and the ten Puzzle blocks have quarter circles, which are fused and machine appliquéd to 6½" squares. The pattern provides a full-size template for the quarter circles. You‘ll need fusible web and invisible thread for machine appliqué. If you prefer hand appliqué, remember to add a scant ¼" seam allowance for the turn under.

You‘ll assemble the blocks in rows as shown in the cover photo and sew the rows together. There are two borders. Jean Ann used the Winding Way quilt block print for the wider outer border and mitered it. She allows extra fabric for mitering these borders in case your seams aren‘t a perfect 1/4". Choose a backing fabric you like from Jennifer‘s collection; we suggest the large apples and apple blossoms master print. Try an allover machine quilting pattern using variegated thread in light pinks, soft greens, and yellows to complement the soft color palette of these prints. If you‘re short on time, these attractive blocks are easily adapted into a tablerunner with a row of three or five of the 12" blocks. Or, make a 9-block quilt and add borders to finish as a 52" square throw quilt or table topper.
