Elm Creek Quilts: The New Year‘s Quilt
by Jennifer Chiaverini
Jennifer’s pretty winter florals are beautifully showcased in this 53½" x 64" lap-size quilt. (Ann Weber designed and made the quilt, and provided the pattern instructions.) You‘ll make twenty star blocks, ten from Color Group I and ten from Color Group II. All the blocks finish at 10½". Ann‘s clear instructions and carefully labeled diagrams ensure that you will cut, arrange, and sew all the setting triangles from the directional toile print correctly. There are lots of smaller triangles in the star blocks. Be careful cutting, handling, and sewing the bias edges to avoid stretching them. Pressing the fabric with spray starch or fabric sizing before cutting the triangles will minimize stretching of the bias edges. Finish the quilt with an inner border that finishes at ½", an outer border that finishes at 4¾", machine quilting, and a narrow binding. Not enough time to make a quilt, but love the stars? Simply make a table runner with one row of three to five blocks. Tip: For a table runner, remember to make the setting triangles (labeled “G” in the pattern) from the toile for all four sides of the runner.
