This pretty and easy to piece 64 1/2" x 64 1/2" quilt was designed and pieced by June Pease and quilted by Pamela Burnham. Sophy's Rose features 8" Square in a Square blocks with narrow borders in four color combinations. There are also four large and twelve small machine appliqued hearts that showcase the pretty rose prints. Select a machine embroidery stitch you love and some contrasting or variegated thread, and sew them down in just a few minutes. If you prefer hand appliqué, remember to add a scant ¼" turn under allowance when you cut out the hearts. The borders are cut along the lengthwise grain so you won't need to piece them. You can miter the border's corners by hand or machine. You'll need four yards of 5/8" wire-edge ribbon to tie the bows for the four large hearts. If the quilt will be washed later, test your ribbon for washability before sewing or gluing the bows on. Hand sew the bows to the hearts with a long Milliner's or Straw needle and a matching color or clear nylon thread. Or, use a permanent, washable glue like Fabri-Tac, which is formulated for use with fabric and trim. If you will be sending the quilt top to a long arm quilter, remember to sew or glue the bows on after it is quilted; long arm quilters do not like to deal with surface embellishments!
